California 2009

This month we flew back to southern California for Uncle David's wedding. It was a quick trip (even including the night we got stuck in the airport), but Owen was an absolute champion. With little sleep and lots of flying and driving, he never missed a beat and always was in a great mood.

He was a little freaked out when we got on the first plane. I don't think it helped that in Billings you often have to walk outside and onto the plan, which made it a little more frightening than it necessarily needed to. He recovered quickly though, and on every flight we got compliments about what a great traveler he was.

Here are some pictures from our adventures. Unfortunately we didn't manage to get pictures of the wedding, because we left the camera in our hotel. Hopefully those will be forthcoming from other family there. We also didn't get any pictures of our dear friends Amelia, Sarah, and Siobhan, who fantastically were in So Cal (and our hotel) at the same time to go to Disneyland for Amelia's birthday. More pictures of those fun ladies to come later in the summer, though.

This picture is from before we actually left. These are some of Owen's amazing acrobatic skills that Roger managed to catch on film. While he really isn't a rambunctious kid, he definitely can get into his "full body sport" mode from time to time.

While we were in California we met up with Roger's best friends growing and their families. This picture is of Owen and Lauren at lunch at the Rainforest Cafe. Owen spent most of lunch (when he was not mesmerized by the animated animals) trying to make Lauren smile. You wouldn't guess it from this picture, but he actually had her in stitches a couple of times.

This is one of several pictures of Owen and Thomas from their fun afternoon. Basically, Thomas is outfitted with his own toddler Disneyland. It was amazing, and Owen had a blast!

Riding the carousel at the mall. Initially Owen was a little reserved (as per the usual), but soon he was on his own horse having a great time.

Goofing off in the hotel. We were nearly done with the pacifier until we had to make some other transitions (such as flying to California) and Owen had some fierce teething. Now that we are home we are trying to wean him off of it again.

At the beach with Dad. Owen was equally mesmerized and overwhelmed.

He was not a fan of having his feet in the sand. Have we mentioned he is sensitive about his tactile experiences?

Eating amazing frozen yogurt at this fantastic shop in Marina del Rey (which was right next door to Chipotle... the only reason we found it).

I can't help myself with this series of pictures. I am quite smitten with this little guy.

We found this baby bird on the sidewalk outside our hotel. He must have fallen over three stories from the roof of the hotel. It was heartbreaking knowing how slim his odds of surviving were. Had we found him in Billings we would have taken him to the vet and tried to nurse him along. Given our situation, we found a safer spot in the bushes to put him. Owen asked about the bird several times that day and insisted on checking on him. He continued to ask about him for days after we left. I wonder if that connection to animals is genetic or simply environmental...

Walking with Dad in the hotel. He is getting so big!

Playing in the fountain at the hotel. It took him a while to warm up to the idea of putting change in the fountain. Shouldn't change be going in my piggy bank?

He was not sure what to make of all the statues around the hotel either.
